Sewanee: The University of the South is a private, coeducational liberal arts college located in Sewanee, which is a census-designated place in Franklin County, in the US state of Tennessee, with over 2300 people, living within its limits, at the time of the 2000 census.
The university was established in 1857 and was founded by clergy and lay delegates from Episcopal dioceses throughout the south. It presently offers its students a number of 35 majors, 26 minors, and 8 pre-professional programs, its most popular majors being the ones in biology, chemistry, economics, English, environmental studies, history, psychology and political science.
Sewanee's athletic teams are known as the Tigers and they compete in NCAA Division III, SCAC.
